EnOcean GmbH is the innovator and producer of the award-winning and patented battery-free wireless sensor technology. EnOcean’s unique combination of miniaturized energy harvesting modules with ultra-low-power radio technology is the basis for innovative maintenance-free wireless sensors. The company as a technology supplier supports applications mainly in building automation. In intelligent green buildings, EnOcean technology adds unparalleled flexibility at lowest investment and operational cost. More than 70 companies worldwide offer products "enabled by EnOcean", resulting in an installed base of about 500,000 units.
Back in October 2001, EnOcean GmbH was founded as a spin-off from Siemens AG by five experienced managers. The patent rights contributed by Siemens and the support from Siemens Technology Accelerator GmbH provided an ideal foundation for the establishment of a successful company.
EnOcean is headquartered in Oberhaching near Munich, Germany, and has a subsidiary in the USA. Currently, the company employs over 35 permanent staff being responsible for its success. EnOcean has won numerous awards, only recently the "Batimat 2007 Innovation Award in Bronze", the "2007 Best innovation in green product and services" of the Working Buildings Week, the "Building Product Innovation Award" at the 100% Design London, the "BuildingGreen’s 2007 Top-10 Green Building Products" and the title "Technology Pioneer 2006" of the World Economic Forum.
EnOcean Technology
The basic idea for this innovative technology is based on a simple observation: Where sensors record a measurement reading, the level of energy changes. Being pressed, a switch changes the temperature or the illumination varies. These processes contain sufficient energy to allow the transmission of radio signals across a distance of up to 300 metres.
Our strength is in the combination of three key technologies: Firstly, the harvesting of energy from the environment, secondly, the use of radical power management techniques that enable our devices to run on minuscule amounts of energy, and finally the use of intelligent software stacks for modular, versatile and user-friendly integration in applications.
EnOcean Alliance
EnOcean GmbH is a promoter of EnOcean Alliance Inc., established at the light+building show 2008. The EnOcean Alliance is a is a consortium of companies (e.g. Omnio, Thermokon, Masco, MK Electric, Distech Controls and EnOcean) working to further develop and promote self-powered wireless monitoring and control systems for sustainable buildings by formalizing the interoperable wireless standard. It has the largest installed base of field-proven wireless building automation networks in the world.
Vision
EnOcean is currently working on new energy converters that are able to generate sufficient energy from slight vibrations or temperature differences. Thanks to further miniaturisation of energy converters and electronic components, EnOcean is opening up completely new areas of use to realize energy-efficiency solutions. For instance in medical technology, one day, we will have a plaster that utilizes the difference between skin and air temperature to wirelessly monitor body conditions such as temperature or blood pressure.
Markus Brehler, CEO and Founder: "Battery-free wireless sensors will make an entrance into many different areas of our lives. Whether at home, at the office, or during our precious leisure time – everywhere, we find new possibilities of switching things or recording states: No time-consuming expensive installation, highly efficient use of limited resources. – The pleasure we derive from innovative solutions keeps our team together and will also fascinate you!"
