EnOcean, developer of batteryless wireless technology, and Gruppo Giordano today announced a new strategic partnership. This cooperation will initiate a coming era of product innovations for energy efficient building control solutions in Italy and will directly address the growing need for green buildings. Based on EnOcean´s miniaturized energy harvesting wireless modules Gruppo Giordano will design and offer customer specific maintenance free sensor and control solutions. These will significantly reduce the energy consumption of heating and lighting in buildings.

The environment as the energy source

EnOcean is the originator of patented energy harvesting wireless technologies. The innovative technology works entirely maintenance-free - without batteries - by detecting information and then transmitting it by short-range wireless; the idea behind the EnOcean solution is to harvest the necessary power from its surroundings: from linear motion, light or differences in temperature, for example. The ambient energy obtained in this way suffices to send a wireless signal and turn on a light for instance. In that way EnOcean-enabled devices can work fully autonomously. Furthermore, the use of wireless switches and wireless sensors greatly simplifies the cabling of a building. At the same time they allow huge flexibility because no new cabling is needed if future alterations are planned. The use of energy harvesting wireless technology enables businesses in different sectors to achieve savings of as much as 40 percent in energy and operating costs. EnOcean technology is already implemented in over 100,000 buildings worldwide, creating more flexibility and cutting energy use.

Wireless in a new dimension

Based on this experience, EnOcean developed its new Dolphin wireless sensor platform for bidirectional communication. The major components of Dolphin system architecture are the STM 300, TCM 300 and TCM 320 wireless modules. Gruppo Giordano can for example implement the STM 300 in energy-autonomous applications to sense temperature, light or air quality. The TCM 300 and TCM 320 transceivers on the other side are best suited for use in line-powered components such as controllers, actuators, repeaters or gateways. All Dolphin modules can be programmed for custom applications through an API interface.

EnOcean-based products will be presented at the Mostra Convegno show at the Thermokon booth A45/B46 (hall 15) and at the Gruppo Giordano booth F17/F19 (hall 1).
