Enabling self-powered EnOcean switches in Bluetooth mesh

Oberhaching, Germany, and Krakow, Poland, July 15, 2021

Silvair has just released the new custom Bluetooth mesh specification for the EnOcean Switch Mesh Proxy Server model. This mesh model is a software that translates the messages used by EnOcean self-powered switches to standardized Bluetooth mesh messages.

In other words, it allows anyone to use EnOcean self-powered switches together with Bluetooth mesh devices within the same wireless network to implement “traditional” switch-based control of lighting control systems.

This new model is already implemented in the most recent version of Nordic’s SDK (nRF Connect SDK), but it can also be used separately.

“We have been working on this model for some time and now decided to open the specification to anyone who wants to utilize EnOcean switches in Bluetooth mesh. We believe in lighting democratisation and see Bluetooth mesh as an interoperable technology platform”, said Simon Slupik, CTO at Silvair.

“Providing a standardized way to use EnOcean’s self-powered switches within lighting control systems based on Bluetooth mesh significantly simplifies system design and enables unified, interoperable lighting control solutions. We believe that Bluetooth mesh solutions like that of Silvair will play an important role as lighting and IoT data platform and therefore actively support the standardization work”, said Matthias Kassner, VP of Product Marketing at EnOcean GmbH.

The EnOcean Switch Mesh Proxy Server is translating the content of Bluetooth data telegrams from EnOcean self-powered Bluetooth switches into standardized Bluetooth mesh messages. The model also enables the configuration of EnOcean switch properties. The specific behaviour of the model is defined in the specification available at: https://silvair.com/resources/product-documents/
