The feels Beach Club Hotel in K\u00fchlungsborn on Germany\u2019s Baltic coast, decided to address this inefficiency. The award-winning hotel, recognized for its sustainability efforts, set out to reduce unnecessary energy consumption while maintaining guest comfort. Managing Director Caty Ost and her team knew that intuition alone wouldn\u2019t be enough. \u201cWe need data, not just gut feeling,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Inefficiency to Data-Driven Solution<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the feels Beach Club Hotel, heating accounts for the largest share of its energy use. Of the approximately 69,000 kWh of gas consumed annually, around 80% is used to heat guest rooms. At the same time, guest behavior made it difficult to control consumption effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal was clear: introduce a smart heating control system that increases transparency, reduces waste, and can be retrofitted without disrupting ongoing hotel operations. Together with system integrator 7m.concepts GmbH, the hotel implemented the solution \u201c7m.cleverHeating\u201d, based on EnOcean technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simple Idea, Smart Technology<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe concept behind the system is straightforward: window open, heating off<\/em>,\u201d summarizes Markus Kluck, Managing Director of 7m-concepts GmbH. Intelligent thermostats installed on radiators are paired with wireless window sensors. As soon as a window is opened, the system automatically reduces the heating output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The installation was completed in just two days, with no need for cabling or structural changes. All components were pre-configured to ensure smooth integration into daily operations. This approach makes it easier to retrofit existing buildings. The system is also scalable, can be used for offices as well and can be connected to existing building automation if required.<\/p>\n\n\n

Full Transparency at a Glance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A central control interface, displayed on a tablet at reception, gives staff real-time visibility into each room. They can instantly see whether windows are open, what the current temperature is, and whether heating is active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This level of control significantly improves efficiency. Rooms can be preheated ahead of guest arrivals and automatically set to lower temperatures after check-out. Housekeeping no longer needs to manually check radiators, saving time and effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system also helps with guest communication. If a room feels cold, staff can quickly identify whether a window was left open overnight and thus provide clarity and transparency in conversations with guests.<\/p>\n\n\n

Efficient, Flexible, and Future-Proof<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The solution is based on EnOcean wireless technology, a well-established standard in building automation. One of its key advantages is energy efficiency: many sensors operate without batteries, using energy harvesting instead. This reduces maintenance while supporting sustainability goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an open standard, EnOcean also allows devices from different manufacturers to be combined, ensuring long-term flexibility and investment security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measurable Results<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The impact of the project is significant. \u201cBy eliminating unnecessary heating and improving control, we expect to reduce energy consumption by up to 30%. Given current energy prices, the investment is projected to pay back within just a few heating seasons\u201d, Ost stats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond cost savings, the environmental benefits are equally important. The hotel currently records emissions of 11.9 grams of CO\u2082 equivalents per room and night \u2013 a figure that is expected to decrease further as gas consumption drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Added Value: Safety and Convenience<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to energy efficiency, the system provides valuable safety benefits. On the Baltic coast, sudden storms can make open windows a risk. With the central dashboard, staff can immediately identify and address such situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security is also improved, as open ground-floor windows are quickly detected. This increased level of control may even have a positive effect on insurance conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The feels Beach Club Hotel is already planning the next step: integrating the heating system with its booking software. In the future, rooms will be automatically prepared based on expected arrival times\u2014ensuring comfort for guests while maximizing efficiency, without any manual intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project demonstrates how smart, wireless retrofitting can transform energy management in hotels.
