What is needed are solutions that combine energy efficiency, sustainability, and user comfort, as well as experienced system integrators who can ensure smooth installation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When retrofitting a listed school building, HGT Ingenieure GmbH chose wireless and battery-free building automation technology from EnOcean. The results were compelling: installation effort was significantly reduced, costly cable routing was eliminated, and teachers and students now benefit from a flexible and user-friendly system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heritage Preservation Meets Modern Learning Concepts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

HGT Ingenieure GmbH<\/a> faced a demanding task during the renovation of a listed school building in Rothenburg, Germany. Due to heritage protection requirements, many of the building’s walls could not be modified. At the same time, the school was to be equipped with a modern cluster concept that connects classrooms through glass partitions, placing high demands on lighting control, solar shading, and indoor climate management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For this project, we had to strike the right balance between heritage preservation, modern building technology, and the needs of a contemporary learning environment. Conventional electrical installation with hard wiring was not an option, nor was cutting into the walls or installing visible surface-mounted wiring,” explains Andre Hanft, Project Manager at HGT Ingenieure GmbH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the existing infrastructure could not be reused. As a result, the engineering team needed a flexible building automation solution that could be integrated into the historic building fabric without compromising comfort or functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wireless Building Automation Delivers Maximum Flexibility<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The team selected wireless EnOcean technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Wireless and battery-free building technology can be integrated into existing buildings with precision and ease. It meets all requirements for comfort and intuitive operation while providing maximum planning reliability,” says Hanft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school building was equipped with EnOcean switch modules featuring single and double rockers, radiator actuators, room temperature controllers, and an EnOcean\/KNX gateway with a 32-channel antenna. Together, these components enable convenient control of lighting, solar shading, and room temperature. Lights can be switched and dimmed, blinds can be operated, and radiators can be individually controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Installation was straightforward, as no cables had to be laid and no walls needed to be opened. This allowed the building’s historic structure to remain completely intact. All control elements were installed in locations that are convenient for both teachers and students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system also offers significant long-term flexibility. If rooms are reconfigured or repurposed in the future, switches and control devices can simply be relocated without installing new wiring, allowing the building to adapt to changing requirements over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Since commissioning, the building automation system has been operating reliably and without any issues. EnOcean technology greatly simplified both the planning and installation process while providing the same level of comfort as a conventional bus system. Its flexibility, ease of installation, and reliable performance have convinced us,” Hanft emphasizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The positive experience with the EnOcean building automation technology has made a lasting impression on HGT Ingenieure GmbH. Eliminating the need for wiring not only reduced installation effort and material costs but also helped conserve valuable resources at a time of rising copper prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
