EnOcean at Light + Building 2018: The perfect fit for self-powered wireless IoT and lighting systems

At booth C30 in Hall 4.1, technology provider EnOcean will be demonstrating self-powered wireless solutions, enabling flexible, maintenance-free applications for the Internet of Things (IoT) and modern lighting control.

Oberhaching, February 27, 2018

EnOcean, world leader in energy harvesting wireless technology, demonstrates at Light + Building 2018 (March 18-23, Frankfurt am Main, Germany) how maintenance-free wireless solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT) and modern lighting solutions can meet the claim expressed by this year’s main theme of “Connected – Secure – Convenient”. At booth 4.1 in Hall C30 as well as at the partner booth of the EnOcean Alliance (booth 9.1 B60), visitors can experience self-powered wireless switches and sensors for maintenance-free sensor solutions for IoT and lighting systems based on open standards. EnOcean´s batteryless devices generate large amounts of reliable sensor data for IoT systems and facilitate highly flexible, maintenance-free applications for global use in building automation, smart homes, LED lighting control and industrial applications. In conjunction with intelligent IoT systems self-powered sensor solutions help optimize the utilization of buildings, create new service models and make buildings more flexible, more energy-efficient and altogether more cost-effective.

The key to intelligent IoT systems

Networked devices form the basis for intelligent buildings and the Internet of Things. They process large volumes of sensor data to make our everyday lives easier, safer and more comfortable. The energy harvesting wireless sensors from EnOcean are the eyes and ears of the IoT, since they collect the data needed to efficiently operate a wide range of IoT devices without the need of a battery.

”To bring sensors to the cloud, EnOcean´s self-powered wireless technology is crucial for collecting large amounts of reliable sensor information“, says Andreas Schneider, CEO at EnOcean. “Maintenance-free sensor solutions based on EnOcean modules will significantly facilitate the transition to big data analytics and the Internet of Things. In close collaboration with strong partners, we will continue developing exciting new self-powered, maintenance-free applications for our customer’s sensor solutions in the IoT.“

At this year´s Light + Building event, EnOcean will be demonstrating maintenance-free sensor solutions for self-powered wireless IoT and lighting systems based on open standards.

Maintenance-free IoT solutions based on the EnOcean wireless standard

At the show, EnOcean will be presenting self-powered wireless switches and sensors for maintenance-free applications optimized for building automation and providing reliable data to IoT systems, such as temperature, humidity, occupancy/non-occupancy and light level. These maintenance-free solutions are based on the EnOcean wireless standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3-1X) introduced by the EnOcean Alliance on the sub 1 GHz band, which has proven to be a resounding success in building automation and smart homes, due to its high reliability and a radio range of up to 30 meters. In combination with IoT systems such as IBM´s Watson IoT Platform, these self-powered solutions help optimize the utilization of buildings, create new service models and make buildings more flexible, more energy-efficient and altogether more cost-effective.

IBM and EnOcean to bring sensors to the cloud for IoT applications in sub 1 GHz

To further develop self-powered wireless solutions with EnOcean radio standard in sub 1 GHz for the Internet of Things, EnOcean is in close collaboration with IBM, a strong partner with longstanding expertise in cloud-based services and IoT. EnOcean is proud to be one of the first IBM Business Partners to use the mark “Ready for IBM Watson IoT”.

In conjunction with IBM´s Watson IoT Platform, a fully managed, cloud-hosted service, and the Smart EnOcean Gateway from Digital Concepts, self-powered EnOcean-based sensors enable maintenance-free solutions for Real Estate Management to increase operational, financial and environmental performance of facilities. Standardized sensor profiles help ensure the interoperability of more than 1,500 products from the EnOcean eco-system, making it possible to develop interoperable system solutions. These solutions can be used in asset management, ambient assisted living projects, insurance or hotel and campus projects, giving maintenance-free wireless switches and sensors based on EnOcean technology.

At booth C30 in Hall 4.1, EnOcean will be also presenting maintenance sensor solutions for modern lighting control on the basis of open standards such as EnOcean, Bluetooth® and zigbee.

Self-powered wireless solutions for EnOcean lighting systems in sub 1 GHz

Maintenance-free wireless sensor solutions based on the EnOcean wireless standard in the sub 1 GHz band have been successfully established for use in LED lighting control. The self-powered wireless standard provides a complete maintenance-free system for controlling LED lighting solutions, including LED lighting controls, solar-powered presence and light sensors, kinetically operated light switches, and a commissioning tool. These wireless controls solutions can be easily added to existing buildings during an upgrade to LED lighting. In addition, these solutions help make LED lighting solutions more energy-efficient and cost-effective, enabling installers to quickly and flexibly install them.

Maintenance-free lighting control solutions for Bluetooth® lighting systems

At booth C30 in Hall 4.1, EnOcean will be presenting self-powered wireless solutions for LED lighting control. The self-powered Easyfit wall switches for Bluetooth® lighting systems enable the development of maintenance-free, ready-to-use LED lighting applications based on energy harvesting technology. The self-powered and wireless Easyfit switches can be commissioned by Near Field Communication (NFC) to allow simple or complex lighting scenes and effects, and enable easy, flexible installation of lighting applications. The wireless Easyfit switches are maintenance-free as they do not require batteries, freely positionable and allow flexible control as well as intuitive usage. Easyfit Bluetooth® switches are already deployed in hundreds of lighting solutions worldwide, providing flexible and reliable self-powered wireless control solutions for 2.4 GHz Bluetooth® lighting systems.

Easyfit Bluetooth® switches are supported by Casambi (hall 4.1, booth G70), Helvar (hall 9.1, booth B60), Silvair (hall 9.1, booth E80), Wirepas (hall 9.1, booth B95 and hall 5.0, booth D29), and Xicato (Agora A10), offering self-powered control solutions for Bluetooth® lighting systems in 2.4 GHz.

At Light + Building 2018, EnOcean will be also presenting the first prototypes of solar-based sensors for Bluetooth® lighting systems, for example, a door and window sensor, a temperature/moisture sensor, an occupancy sensor and a light sensor.

Maintenance-free 2.4 GHz zigbee lighting solutions

EnOcean partnered with Philips, a world leading manufacturer of lighting applications, to develop self-powered lighting solutions for zigbee systems on the 2.4 GHz band for use in consumer and commercial LED lighting systems. The Philip´s Hue tap switch, for example, is a self-powered wireless switch, which is the ideal flexible, maintenance-free control for the Philips Hue lighting system for LED consumer lighting.
