CES 2018: Self-powered IoT sensors for Bluetooth® and EnOcean wireless sensor networks

At Sands #42735, technology provider EnOcean will be demonstrating self-powered wireless switches and sensors, powered by their surroundings thanks to energy harvesting technology, providing reliable data for intelligent buildings and the IoT.

Salt Lake City, UT/Las Vegas, NV – December 12, 2017

At the International CES 2018 in Las Vegas (January 9-12, 2018), EnOcean, world leader in energy harvesting wireless technology, will be demonstrating self-powered wireless solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT). At booth #42735, visitors can experience self-powered wireless switches and sensors for energy harvesting wireless sensor solutions based on Bluetooth® and the EnOcean wireless standard on the sub 1 GHz band (ISO/IEC 14543-3-1x). Generating large amounts of reliable sensor data for IoT systems, EnOcean’s batteryless devices facilitate highly flexible, maintenance-free applications for global use in building automation, smart homes, LED lighting control and industrial applications. In combination with IoT systems, these self-powered solutions help optimize the utilization of buildings, create new service models and make buildings more flexible, more energy-efficient and altogether more cost-effective.

The key to intelligent IoT systems

Networked devices form the basis of the Internet of Things. They process large volumes of sensor data to make our everyday lives easier, safer and more comfortable. EnOcean´s self-powered wireless sensors are the eyes and ears of the IoT, as they collect the required data to operate large numbers of IoT devices efficiently, without any need of a battery.

“To bring sensors to the cloud, EnOcean´s self-powered wireless technology is crucial for collecting large amounts of reliable sensor information,” says Andreas Schneider, CEO of EnOcean. “Maintenance-free sensor solutions based on open standards such as EnOcean and Bluetooth® will significantly facilitate the transition to big data analytics and the Internet of Things. In close collaboration with strong partners, we will continue developing exciting new self-powered, maintenance-free applications for our customer’s sensor solutions in the IoT.”

At CES 2018, EnOcean will be demonstrating cutting-edge self-powered wireless solutions for the Internet of Things based on Bluetooth® and EnOcean.

Easyfit portfolio for Bluetooth® lighting systems

EnOcean now offers wireless and self-powered Easyfit switches for Bluetooth® lighting systems for worldwide usage, enabling maintenance-free, ready-to-use LED lighting applications based on energy harvesting technology.

The self-powered and wireless Easyfit switches can be commissioned by Near Field Communication (NFC) to allow simple or complex lighting scenes and effects, and enable easy, flexible installation of lighting applications. The wireless Easyfit switches are maintenance-free as they do not require batteries, are freely positionable and allow flexible control as well as intuitive usage. Easyfit Bluetooth® switches are being employed in hundreds of lighting solutions, offering self-powered control for Bluetooth® lighting systems in 2.4 GHz.

At CES 2018, EnOcean will be also presenting the first prototypes of solar-based sensors for Bluetooth® lighting systems, for example, a door and window sensor, a temperature/moisture sensor, an occupancy sensor and a light sensor.

Self-powered wireless IoT solutions based on EnOcean

At the show, EnOcean will be also demonstrating a complete portfolio of self-powered wireless sensors optimized for building automation. One of these sensors, for example, is a solar-powered temperature/humidity sensor, which can be flexibly positioned on the wall or simply used as a stand-alone device. Visitors to the show can experience this cutting-edge device generating reliable sensor data for IoT systems also at the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) booth (Sands, #42914).

These maintenance-free solutions are based on the EnOcean wireless standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3-1X) introduced by the EnOcean Alliance on the sub 1 GHz band, which has proven to be a resounding success in building automation and smart homes, due to its high reliability and a radio range of up to 98 feet. Self-powered wireless sensor solutions help to make buildings more flexible, more energy-efficient and more cost-effective. Together with leading industry partner IBM, EnOcean will present a cutting-edge IoT solution on the EnOcean wireless standard.

IBM and EnOcean to bring sensors to the cloud for IoT applications in sub 1 GHz

To further develop self-powered wireless solutions with EnOcean radio standard in sub 1 GHz for the Internet of Things, EnOcean is in close collaboration with IBM, a strong partner with longstanding expertise in cloud-based services and IoT. EnOcean is proud to be one of the first IBM Business Partners to use the mark “Ready for IBM Watson IoT.”

In combination with IBM´s Watson IoT Platform, a fully managed, cloud-hosted service, and the Smart EnOcean gateway from Digital Concepts, self-powered EnOcean-based sensors enable maintenance-free solutions for Real Estate Management to increase operational, financial, and environmental performance of facilities. Standardized sensor profiles help ensure the interoperability of more than 1,500 products from the EnOcean eco-system, making it possible to develop interoperable system solutions. These solutions can be used in asset management, ambient assisted living projects, insurance or hotel or campus projects, giving maintenance-free wireless switches and sensors based on EnOcean technology.
