EnOcean IoT Connector – providing data for the IoT

The integration of EnOcean devices is now easier than ever before

Data is the foundation for the vast range of applications in the Internet of Things (IoT). This data is collected by trillions of sensors and processed in smart applications to provide better insights and drive the right decisions. It therefore enables a better understanding of our environment making our lives more comfortable, our work more effective and our lifestyle more sustainable.

EnOcean works with our vast partner ecosystem to enable seamless end-to-end solutions from data generation to customer application. The EnOcean IoT Connector allows the use of existing IT infrastructure – such as Access Points or Gateways – as IoT data backbone.

IoT applications in Smart Spaces

The EnOcean IoT Connector processes sensor data from wireless sensors using energy harvesting technology. These sensors generate the required power for operation from the environment meaning that they are self-powered and operate maintenance-free. Here are some examples of common sensor types used for Smart Spaces:

Lighting

Temperature

Air Quality

Leveraging existing IT infrastructure

Using the EnOcean IoT Connector in conjunction with already existing IT infrastructure – such as IP Access Points or Gateways capable of receiving EnOcean radio telegrams – provides a cost-effective IoT solution as it eliminates the need for a dedicated IoT data network. An example of such setup is described in detail here.

EnOcean provides a simple, low-cost USB stick that can be plugged into suitable Access Points or Gateways enabling them to receive and transmit EnOcean radio telegrams.

EnOcean-enabled Access Points or Gateways can simply forward all received EnOcean radio telegrams to the EnOcean IoT Connector using a secure network tunnel running on top of the existing network connection. There is no need for any local data processing which keeps the local SW complexity at a minimum.

The EnOcean IoT Connector

The EnOcean IoT Connector implements all required security and data processing functionality to transform received radio telegram data into easy-to-use sensor data in standardized JSON format which is then provided to the end application.

The EnOcean IoT connector is delivered as ready-to-use SW package (Docker container) that can run on a wide variety of platforms ranging from low-cost computing platforms, dedicated on-premises servers to Azure or AWS cloud deployments.

Bringing it all together – EnOcean IoT Connector solution architecture

The combination of EnOcean energy-harvesting sensors, EnOcean-enabled Access Points or Gateways and the EnOcean IoT Connector provides customer applications with easy access to real time sensor data without the need for a dedicated IoT network infrastructure.

Benefits at a glance

  • Reuse of existing IT infrastructure as IoT data network
  • Lightweight, platform-agnostic design enabling wide range of deployments
  • Standardized data interface (JSON) for customer applications
  • Full control over the entire data flow including the option for complete on-premises deployment

The EnOcean IoT Connector is a software that is available as a Docker container image. A container is a standard unit of software and can be deployed and run anywhere.

  • Output and deployment: Easy adoption by IoT clouds
Customer applications consume IoT data in a „key-value pair“ format, like JSON. One key feature of the IoT Connector software is that it decodes the IoT data from EnOcean protocol and translates it into ready-to-use data in JSON format to be used in the actual application.
  • Management API: The Management API onboards the sensors
Sensors are easy to onboard and to commission via the app EnOcean Tool using NFC, a web interface or directly with our Management API.

    Features of the Management API:
    • Easily onboard (add, edit, remove) sensors into the IoT Connector
    • OpenAPI
    • Backup possibility
