A High-End Mountain Resort relies on EnOcean Technology
June 23, 2025
Sustainability is shaping global tourism. Guests and locals should harmonize their needs with the protection of nature and the environment. Despite economic interests, it is crucial to use resources such as energy sparingly. The example of a high-end mountain resort in China demonstrates how IoT technology from EnOcean enables smart building automation. This allows energy to be used efficiently, and CO2 emissions to be reduced. A convincing story of sustainable activity that promotes the well-being of people.
High requirement on smart building management, sustainability and well-being
The Dachangping Leisure Resort Hotel, located on Dazhangping Mountain in Anji (China), covers 10,100 square meters of land and 4,800 square meters of buildings. The hotel includes dining, sports, conference, and accommodation facilities. Surrounded by mountains and bamboo forests, it offers guests a unique escape from the city.
Key requirements for this high-quality and sustainable project were energy and carbon reduction, as the Anji region plays an important role in China’s dual-carbon strategy. At the same time, it needs to offer a high level of guest comfort.
Key requirements included:
- Smart guest room control for a better stay
- Automatic lighting and HVAC based on room occupancy
- Power-down of non-essential equipment when guests leave
- System interaction using data from a weather station
- Remote maintenance capabilities due to the mountain location
Hybrid Control Architecture
The solution INTERFUEHLER Automation Equipment (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. developed combines wireless flexibility with wired reliability. All devices below the ceiling use wireless, battery-free EnOcean technology. Devices above the ceiling connect via bus systems. Each light, air vent, and other device has a unique address for individual control. This setup allows precise scene creation and enhances comfort.
Designers placed beds near the windows so guests can enjoy stunning mountain and bamboo forest views from bed. Guests can open the curtains by pressing a button – directly from the bed. Scene and HVAC panels are placed at the bedside. Temperature control is based on reading closer to the guest, ensuring optimal comfort.
Integrated Systems for Energy Efficiency
All systems are interconnected to reduce energy use without compromising comfort. For example, when a room is unoccupied, lights dim and air conditioning flow decreases. If the sensors detect no movement for a longer period, the lights turn off. Outdoor brightness data adjusts indoor lighting and HVAC settings. Rooms that remain vacant will have shades drawn, lights off, and HVAC shut down.
Scenes and Zones
Scene modes and zone control are used throughout the hotel. One-touch scenes simplify use for guests and create a welcoming atmosphere. For staff, zone control improves management efficiency. From public spaces like the lobby and restaurant to private rooms and meeting areas, all zones have scene control and device-level adjustments. Each device can be configured individually. The wireless setup also allows easy reconfiguration for future repurposing of the spaces.
Visual Control and Remote Access
Guests and staff can use both local EnOcean panels and remote smart terminals. The system supports web access and apps for Windows, iOS, and Android. It allows control of lights, brightness, color temperature, scenes, air conditioning temperature, and airflow. Remote maintenance is also supported, ensuring fast response in case of issues.
Benefits of the EnOcean-Based Solution for sustainability and well-being
The project fulfils the high requirements for smart building automation, sustainability and comfort. It reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions and increases people’s well-being. Battery-free, wireless sensors and IoT technology from EnOcean made it possible. Their benefits appear as follows:
- High Flexibility
Wireless, battery-free devices can be installed anywhere. Every device has a unique address. Furniture placement can be optimized without rewiring. This improves both design freedom and guest experience. - Lower Installation and Maintenance Costs
The system requires no wiring below the ceiling, reducing labor, materials, and time. Future upgrades are easier and more cost-efficient. Maintenance is minimal, with no batteries to replace. - Maximum Energy Savings
Traditional hotel systems depend on room keycards. This solution goes further. It links shading, air conditioning, occupancy, and outdoor conditions to save energy. Features like sleep-mode adjustments and door/window sensors further enhance efficiency. - Carbon Reduction
The project saved 19,412 meters of cable, reducing 0.87 tons of copper and 3.22 tons of CO₂. It also avoided 2.04 tons of PVC and another 5.46 tons of CO₂. Yearly energy savings will result in even greater carbon reductions. - A Truly Sustainable Solution
The project used a wide range of EnOcean wireless and battery-free switches, thermostats, and sensors from different brands. This minimized maintenance and maximized system performance.
