Intelligent wireless sensor technology for modernizing a tram depot

September 2, 2025

Intelligent building automation allows energy consumption to be adapted to room usage and reduces the carbon footprint. A prime example of sustainability is the individual and flexible building automation system at the tram depot in Angers, France.

Thermokon Sensortechnik GmbH assisted the operator with planning and installation. The EnOcean partner relied on intelligent wireless sensor technology based on energy harvesting technology and using battery-free and wireless EnOcean sensors.

Modernization with intelligent room sensor technology

In Angers, France, the RATP Group plans, operates, and maintains every part of the mobility chain—from operation to maintenance. Sustainability shapes public transport: in 2011, the city added a tram network to its bus routes. The three lines connect 29 municipalities with around 300,000 inhabitants. Today, the entire tram fleet runs on environmentally friendly ground power. This climate-friendly energy supply avoids air pollutants and minimizes driving noise.

After 15 years, the depot was modernized. RATP equipped the maintenance hall and all break rooms with intelligent room sensors. The result is impressive, not only because of its clear contribution to CO2 reduction. Wireless sensors from Thermokon use EnOcean technology to precisely regulate room temperature, heating, and lighting—making tram operations energy- and cost-efficient.

Wireless sensor solutions from EnOcean impress

Yann Brossard, administrator for automation and industrial IT systems at RATP, opted for wireless technology for the modernization project: “We wanted to implement the measure as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. A wireless system offered ideal conditions, as all components could be integrated into the building automation system without great effort and without new wiring.”

In search of a product portfolio that combined this basic requirement with high reliability and low maintenance in daily operation, Brossard turned to Thermokon. EnOcean-based sensor solutions impressed him with their performance and versatility: “The wide range of sensors enabled us to respond flexibly to specific requirements. Thermokon also proved to be a strong partner for planning and implementation – thanks to the high quality and reliability of the solutions, which ensure precise room parameter detection and control.”

Economical: Wireless sensor technology with energy harvesting

RATP planned and implemented the project independently, without involving an external system integrator. The Thermokon solutions were integrated into an SBC control solution via the STC 65 bidirectional gateway in order to communicate with the building management system. Thanks to EnOcean technology, this communication is wireless. Two SRE repeaters ensure reliable transmission quality, even in areas of the building with poor reception.

The radio-based, wireless networking with the solutions for recording room parameters brought RATP noticeable added value. The flexible placement of the sensors and the quick, easy installation proved to be particularly advantageous, as no cabling is required.

Dependable measurement and recording of room parameters

A total of five NOVOS 3 SR room sensors and four multi-compact sensors are used in the RATP depot. They are used for reliable measurement and recording of room temperature, humidity, and CO2 level, as well as for recording brightness and movement. They are supplemented by various room temperature sensors, motion and brightness detectors, and outdoor brightness sensors. This allows for the comprehensive collection of all parameters that are important for the needs-based, energy-efficient control of room temperature, heating, and lighting. In the lounge, the SAB+ electronic radiator valve with continuous individual room control provides additional comfort.

The energy supply for the sensors is well thought out and cost-efficient. Equipped with solar cells and intelligent energy harvesting, they significantly reduced the installation costs in the depot. Their energy-independent operation and lack of maintenance save RATP time and money on a daily basis. The same applies to the electronic radiator valve, which, thanks to its clever design, uses the temperature difference between the radiator and the room to generate the necessary energy.

Flexible implementation ensures high energy efficiency

Brossard is highly satisfied with the result: “Thanks to the powerful Thermokon portfolio and sustainable EnOcean technology, we have implemented building automation in our depot in a flexible and tailor-made manner. We save considerable time and costs both during installation and in everyday use. With improved energy efficiency, we are also sending a clear signal for sustainability.”
