Wireless Lighting Brings Aviation History to Life

At Brodhead Airport in southern Wisconsin, the Alfred & Lois Kelch Aviation Museum keeps the Golden Age of Aviation alive. Vintage aircraft still take off from its working hangar.
Historic artifacts fill its galleries and archive. United Systems Associates, a Delta Controls Partner, needed one control platform for these very different spaces. They turned to EnOcean wireless technology for flexible, zone-by-zone lighting across the museum floor. Kelch’s campus works like no ordinary museum. Aircraft move through oversized doors that open for flights and events. A second hangar hosts weddings, meetings, and community rentals. Upstairs, a fragile archive holds books, photographs, and blueprints dating to the 1800s. Downstairs, public galleries welcome visitors every day. Each space needed its own comfort and lighting, without one system overwhelming another. United Systems Associates also needed remote access control for a largely volunteer-run team. And exhibit lighting needed to highlight aircraft and artifacts, zone by zone, not just switch on and off. United Systems Associates built the system around Delta‘s enteliWEB platform. Each phase used a different strategy, but shared one operating experience for museum staff. The final phase connected the hangars to the main museum and introduced visitor-focused lighting. Delta O3 Sensor Hubs interface with EnOcean wireless devices, splitting exhibits into multiple lighting zones. Because the devices communicate wirelessly, staff could add zone control without rewiring galleries or the working hangar. Programmed eZNS wall stations let staff choose zones and adjust dimming locally. Meanwhile, enteliWEB gives staff one central view of lighting, HVAC, and access across the whole campus. Alongside the lighting network, Delta Red5 access control lets staff issue or remove credentials for volunteers and renters. Authorized staff can lock or unlock doors remotely, cutting down on-site visits. VIVOTEK cameras add visual verification for events and the aircraft stored inside. The result gives Kelch one operating view across an airfield, event venue, museum, and archive. HVAC now follows real museum and event activity, not fixed schedules. Volunteer credentials can be changed or removed as responsibilities shift, cutting the need for physical keys. Staff can support renters and verify conditions remotely, without staying on-site through every event. Zoned, EnOcean-enabled lighting highlights aircraft and artifacts for a more engaging visitor experience. The archive keeps its own stable, preservation-focused climate, while the public museum below stays comfortable for guests. The EnOcean wireless network also opens a path to a more responsive museum. Occupancy sensing could show how visitors move through the galleries. Future lighting could brighten displays as guests approach and dim unused areas automatically. These features are not yet installed, but the wireless architecture already supports them, without replacing any core systems.
